It is good to understand the basic difference between a film camera and a digital camera. In the case of using a film camera, the image is formed from the target and focusing on the film, which reacts chemically when striked by flash light while capturing the image. Digital camera has an image sensor in place of film that reacts to light by sending electrical signals. The information is collected from the sensor by the camera and stores it as a collection of pixels in a file, which is stored in a memory card. A digital photo image is made up of thousands of tiny dots, or pixels. You have a megapixel, when million pixels are added together. It is the number of pixels which informs you about the pixels the image file has. A camera which captures eight million pixels is known as an eight-megapixel camera. The sizes of the photos you can print and the amount of cropping one can do are determined by the number of megapixels a camera features. For snapshots, a 4-megapixel camera may be sufficient, but in case you need poster size images, 8-megapixels are more suitable.
Most of high quality cameras these days have at least 10-megapixels. But, it should be noted that the number of megapixels alone does not determine the quality of a digital camera's images. According to size factors and other features, the ratings are divided into several categories. All cameras with built in lenses are included in the point-and-shoot category. The small cameras among them are included in Subcompact and Compact categories. Being easy to use and light weight, they differ in the number of options and features. But normally they do not have many manual controls. Compacts are often the least expensive cameras which are available.
The Super zoom subcategory consists of cameras with wide zoom capacity. Since they have wide zoom ranges, they are usually larger and more expensive. The largest cameras are single-lens reflex models, which make use of interchangeable lenses. But some of them are very compact. These days a new type of advanced camera has reached the scene known as micro four-thirds model. According to consumer reports - digital cameras they have large imaging sensors. But they are small and light like compacts and subcompacts. After deciding the type of camera you want, and the number of megapixels you should check out the brand profiles.

Nikon. Not necessarily between these two, but just in general. Olympus is a respectable brand, but Nikon and Canon are really the leaders of the photography pack.
