Macbook Pro User Guide

1) First steps (a) Unpacking

Remove your Mac Book Pro from the box and place it on a firm surface near an electric socket. In the box, you should also have

• an 85W MagSafe Power Adaptor
• a power cord
• a DVI to VGA adaptor

(b) Charging

Strip the plastic film from the 85W MagSafe Power Adaptor. Ensure the plug sits properly in the Power Adaptor and place it in the electric socket. Take the other end of the Power Adaptor lead and connect it to the magnetic MagSafe power port on the left-hand side of your MacBook Pro.

If the Power Adaptor lead won’t stretch to your nearest electric socket, remove the plug from the adaptor by pulling it up. Beneath the plug is a socket. Insert one end of the power cord into the adaptor socket and the other into the electric socket.

Please note: always disconnect your MacBook Pro from the electricity by pulling the plugs and not the leads.

An amber light on the MagSafe connector at the power port tells you the MacBook Pro battery is charging. When a green light appears, the battery is fully charged. If no light appears, check the connections and make sure you’ve switched on the electric socket.

(c) Basic features

When you open your MacBook Pro, you’ll find

• an iSight camera and camera indicator light at the top of the screen
• stereo speakers either side of the keyboard
• a power button on the right of the keyboard
• a microphone to the left of the keyboard
• a trackpad and a trackpad button

From left to right along the front edge of the MacBook Pro are

• an infrared (IR) receiver
• a sleep mode indicator light
• a display release button
• a slot-loading SuperDrive

From left to right on the left-hand side of your MacBook Pro are

• a MagSafe power port
• one USB 2.0 port (15 inch model); two USB 2.0 ports (17 inch model)
• an audio line in/optical digital audio in port
• a headphone out/optical digital audio out port
• an ExpressCard/34 slot

From left to right on the right-hand side of your MacBook Pro are

• a security slot for a cable and lock
• a USB 2.0 port
• a FireWire 400 port
• a FireWire 800 port
• a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000Base-T)
• a DVI port

Underneath your MacBook Pro is the battery. The battery has a row of indicator lights and a button.

2) Initial set-up (a) Setup Assistant

Switch on your MacBook Pro by pressing the power button. Setup Assistant will come up on the screen.

Setup Assistant takes you through the process of establishing your user account and your email and Internet details. If you have another Mac and want to carry files and applications from it to your MacBook Pro, Setup Assistant will show you how. If you want to transfer such information at a later date, use Migration Assistant instead.

• Select the Applications folder
• Open Utilities
• Double-click Migration Assistant

If you have another Mac you don’t intend to use in the future, and you’ve bought music, audiobooks, films or TV shows with iTunes, de-authorise the computer. For more details, go to the iTunes Help menu and select iTunes Help.

(b) Internet connection

You can connect wirelessly to the Internet using your MacBook Pro’s built-in AirPort Extreme facility. For more information

• go to the Menu Bar
• select Help>Mac Help
• search for “AirPort”

Alternatively, connect an Ethernet cable to the port on the right-hand side of your MacBook Pro. Place the other end in a cable modem, DSL modem or network.

For a dial-up Internet connection

• buy an external Apple USB Modem
• place it in one of your MacBook Pro’s USB ports
• connect a phone lead from a phone jack to the modem

(c) Sleep mode

Use the sleep mode on your MacBook Pro if you stop work for a short period. To start the sleep mode, you have the following choices:

• select Apple>Sleep on the Menu Bar
• close the screen
• press the power button and select sleep in the dialogue box
• select Apple>System Preferences; choose Energy Saver; set the timer

Please note: don’t move your MacBook Pro until the sleep indicator light on the front edge comes on. This tells you the hard disc has stopped. If you move the MacBook Pro with the disc still spinning, you can damage the disc and lose data.

To wake your MacBook Pro from sleep mode:

• open the screen if you closed it, or
• if the screen is open, press any key or the power button

(d) Shut down

If you’ve finished work on your MacBook Pro for the day, shut it down by either

• selecting Apple>Shut Down on the Menu Bar, or
• pressing the power button and selecting Shut Down in the dialogue box

3) Using the trackpad

With the trackpad, you can:

• scroll
• Click
• double-click
• drag
• move the pointer

To control the distance you send the pointer across the screen, adjust the speed of your finger on the trackpad:

• Move your finger slowly to send the pointer a short distance
• Move your finger fast to send the pointer further

Other features of the trackpad include the following:

• Two finger scrolling. Scroll in any direction by making the same movements with two fingers on the trackpad.
• Secondary or right clicking. Use shortcut menu commands by placing two fingers on the trackpad and clicking the trackpad button.

Some trackpad features apply to certain applications:

• Two finger rotating. By rotating two fingers on the trackpad, you can turn images and text.
• Two finger pinching. By pinching together and pushing apart two fingers on the trackpad, you can zoom in or out.
• Three finger swiping. Flick through a series of images or the pages of a document by swiping three fingers on the trackpad.

• select Apple>System Preferences
• click Keyboard & Mouse
• click Trackpad

4) Quick Mac OS X guide (a) Introduction

Your MacBook Pro has the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard operating system. This controls your applications, files and peripheral devices, and works in a similar fashion to Windows.

(b) The basics

Your basic controls are the keyboard and trackpad. Windows users find they have to use the keyboard and trackpad fewer times on the MacBook Pro to achieve comparable results.

(c) Main features

To help you manage and navigate everything successfully on your MacBook Pro, there are four main features:

• Desktop
• Dock
• Finder
• Menu bar

Desktop

Desktop is your starting point each time you use your MacBook Pro. It stores items such as files and images.

The first icon you’ll come across on Desktop is the Macintosh HD (hard drive). Other icons appear when you use the various functions of your MacBook Pro. To view an icon’s files and applications, double-click it.

Also note that

• if you connect a device to your MacBook Pro, an icon appears on the Desktop

if you allow other users on your MacBook Pro, each one can have a Desktop

• when you run applications, Desktop always lies behind them

Dock

The Dock is a row of icons lying at the bottom of your MacBook Pro screen. Click on an icon to reach the files and applications it contains.

When a window appears on the screen, it has three buttons in the top left corner.

• The red button closes the window
• The yellow button minimises the window to the Dock
• The green button maximises and minimises the window’s size

Finder

The icon on the far left of the Dock is the Finder. Use the Finder to navigate and manage your MacBook Pro’s files and applications.

Menu Bar

The Menu Bar is a line at the top of the MacBook Pro’s screen.

With the Menu Bar, you can

• see recent work
• view and adjust settings and applications
• end applications
• interact with a programme
• log in and out
• put the MacBook Pro into sleep mode
• begin restart
• switch off your MacBook Pro

Customising desktop

To customise Desktop, select the System Preferences icon in the Dock or Apple>System Preferences on the Menu Bar. For more details of what you can do, select Mac Help and search for System Preferences or for the item you want to change.

5) Connectivity

Your MacBook Pro has a comprehensive range of ports for printers, phones, iPods, cameras, joysticks, hard drives and so on. As well as USB 2.0 ports, you have a FireWire 400 and a FireWire 800. These are ideal for connecting high speed devices such as video cameras.

The DVI port allows you to connect a monitor, TV or projector. If you have a VGA device, then simply use the supplied DVI/VGA adaptor.

Use the audio line in/optical digital audio in port to connect digital audio equipment or a microphone. Use the headphone out/optical digital audio out port for audio equipment, headphones or speakers.

The ExpressCard/34 slot accepts all standard 34mm ExpressCards. Please note that when you want to remove a card, push it gently first.

6) Battery

When you use the MacBook Pro without the MagSafe Power Adaptor, the time you can run the computer depends on your applications and the peripheral devices that are draining the battery’s power. You can save battery energy by removing unnecessary devices and by switching off your AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth® features when you’re not using them.

Press the button on the battery to check the energy level. The lights at the side of the button tell you how much charge you have left, if any. You can also inspect the battery level by simply checking the battery status icon in the Menu Bar.

The battery can be charged at any time. You’ll find you can charge it more quickly, however, when your MacBook Pro is in sleep mode or switched off.

If you want to replace a failing battery with a full charged one, always shut down your MacBook Pro first.

Does Kodak Memory Cards Work With Other Brand Cameras?

Hello.
I'm planning on going to a convention next month and realize I'm too afraid to bring my sony a100k with me because it's so big -
that said I'm looking for small cameras, but at the same time I realized I have only Kodak Memory cards.
Do Kodak Memory cards work with other brand cameras, like Nikon, Sony or Canon?
And if they don't, do you think it'd be more worthwhile to get a Kodak camera or buy new memory cards?

Of course they do ... all memory cards are standardized. CF, SD / SDHC, xD and Memory Sticks

So if your Kodak Memory cards are designed for use in a Sony camera (Memory Stick) they will work. If they are SD, xD or CF cards the reason they will not work is not because of the brand, but the size and shape of the card.

Here is the run down. Memory Sticks (any brand) only work in Sony digital P&S cameras. xD memory cards only work in Olympus and a few older Fujifilm P&S cameras and SD / SDHC memory cards will work with all other P&S cameras.

Lens Olympus Evolt

I'm in no way a professional photographer, but I enjoy and love photography as a hobby. And I found that with Olympus SLR cameras, sometimes it's not about finding THE best camera. For hobbyists like me, maybe the more important thing is to find the best camera deal without compromising much of the quality. This is why I went for the 8-megapixel Evolt E500 digital SLR camera with 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 and 40-150mm f/3.5-4.5 Zuiko lenses.

My brother has been a SLR camera user for years, and he currently has a 20D with 420EX flash and very expensive L series lenses. When I bought the E500 and the dual lens kit, even my brother had to agree that among all the cameras in the market right now, my E500 dual lens kit is the best deal for my money. We both also agreed that the E500 is lighter and more ergonomic than his 20D. Although my E500 pales in comparison to my brother's 20D in terms of taking pictures in low light, I read that this problem has been resolved in the E300 and with firmware upgrades.

We also loved how the rear LCD controls can access pretty much everything from exposure to flash speed to ISO, making it more user-friendly especially for newbie SLR users like me. However, my brother said that it would be nice if Olympus SLR cameras also had the small LCD up top which is found in Canon cameras that provides supplementary details and information on camera modes and settings. Six months later, I'm still very happy with my E500 and I've been using it more frequently. I even managed to talk three of my friends into getting the E500 dual lens kit as well.

My brother and I went to India just recently to tour Agra, visit the Sikhanders tomb, Taj Mahal, and other amazing sites in the country. At the end of the trip, I have to say, my pictures looked better than the ones my brother had taken with his fancy camera and ridiculously expensive accessories. Well, his pictures definitely showed more detail, but in terms of color saturation and overall look and presentation, my pictures were better.

I do admit, however, that my camera wasn't able to take good action shots when we were on a speeding bus. My brother's camera came out with amazing action shots and low-light pictures. When I tried taking pictures in the evening, some of my pictures didn't have proper focus, unlike my brother's camera which also focused on the same subject as mine. Like I said, I'm not a pro, so maybe some of the "flaws" I report here may be caused not by the camera but by the user.

Getting the perfect camera, is never an easy thing, especially with the way digital technology is constantly changing. Fortunately, there are plenty of helpful websites online, that can narrow down your search and help you find the camera with all the features important to you.

When you begin to contemplate an SLR it is not the price that is the critical deciding factor. With an SLR, the minute you purchase an accessory, an extra lens, a flash, anything, you are embarking on a marriage that will last for a very long time. The critical thing to consider is whether the maker has the range of accessories that you will ever need to meet your photographic aspirations. If the maker lacks some things that you feel you may need and buy some day, that's not the brand for you.

In this sense I think you've chosen wisely, both Canon and Nikon can represent a happy marriage for the longer term. However there are significant differences between these makers too.

Each tends to design their cameras differently so one brand might feel better in your hand than the other. For me that's the Nikon, it's a bit bigger than the Canons and I find the key controls slip comfortably under each finger making the camera a joy to use. However, there are people who say the same about Canon too, it depends on your hands and what kind of work you do. So in the end you have to physically hold each model to determine which you prefer.

The other difference is historical. Nikon tends to be more conservative and slower to innovate but in return when a new model of something does come out it's incredible both in quality and functionality. Canon innovates faster so in any given moment they seem to have more solutions than Nikon, but by rushing things to market they end up selling things that aren't really fully debugged and working. Their new stuff works well to be sure, but if you wait a few months or a year, Nikon's version ends up a hell of a lot better.

Nikon also tends to stay away from wizbang stuff. Canon often builds in features which seem just wonderful to the novice photographer but in fact they are features that you'll never use since there are better ways to achieve the same end. Still though, it sells a lot of cameras since people are taken in by features even when the features have no value. Nikon doesn't build in stuff that you don't need, they put their resources into making sure that what you do need is functional and effective.

Nikon tends to better protect your investment. Canon has a history of obsoleting lenses and other accessories when staying compatible is no longer convenient for the design of a new camera model. Nikon protects your investment by designing its new models to remain compatible with its older technologies. That means you can be sure that any model you buy in the future will always work with the things you already own.

At the consumer level Canon also tends to go on the cheap and tries to build sexy looking bodies. But that means you've got something you better not drop for fear it will break and it means you don't always have the controls you need to work effectively. Nikon doesn't build sexy cheap bodies, theirs tend to be robust and more traditional, most people will tell you they feel better in the hand too.

The only comment between the two bodies you're considering that I would make is to caution you that the entry level Canon does not have a spot meter. That could affect you seriously if you plan to do a lot of macro work or if you plan on doing critical exposures. The other difference is that the Nikon has two control dials to only one on the Canon. That means that on the Canon you press more buttons to achieve a setting than you would on the Nikon. Neither of these differences however are show stoppers depending on what it is you plan to photograph. Hold each model and make a decision on the basis of how it feels to you.

One final bit of advice too, the lens you are suggesting is ok, it gets you a reasonable range. I started with an 18mm - 70mm and a 70mm - 300mm and between those two I was able to address most of my needs. However a year after I started using those I got myself a Nikon 18mm - 200mm. The problem with digital photography is that you don't want to constantly be changing lenses because every time you do, you're running the risk of getting dust on your sensor. I find the 18mm - 200mm lens has become my primary lens now. There are many times when I'll be in the field all day and never use another. I have specialized lenses too for specific subjects but they are used rarely in comparison to that one. So give some thought to this lens too. And you can have it for the Canon too if that's your choice of camera. Sigma and Tamron make a similar lens that fits on the Canon bodies. Just be aware that the Tamron one does not have an image stabilizer.

Oh yes, and what do I use? I used a Canon professional film SLR for thirty years but when I went digital I went with Nikon. I use a Nikon D200. Canon did however get a bit of business from me, I also use a Canon Powershot G7 as my point and shoot camera when I need something that fits in my pocket instead of carrying around a thirty five pound knapsack of gear. Canon builds super P&S cameras I think, but when it comes to SLRs Nikon wins hands down. And that’s not only my personal opinion. Anytime I’ve been to an event that involves professional photographers, I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of Canon SLRs I will see and I will have fingers left over, while at the same time I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the number of Nikon SLRs that I will see in use.

My personal recommendation about your list? I'd go for the Nikon D40x with either the lens you list or the one I'm recommending. That will lead to a happy marriage for years to come. But then in the end it's still your choice. Good Luck!

I have a fuji finepix 9000 that I love and have had it for years. I have noticed when I shoot red or yellows and get the pictures developed the reds and yellows are way over saturated. They look great on the computer screen but I get them back (from Kodak) and it's blech! It is the camera or the developer? I don't use a filter of any kind. Should I give that a try?

do you mean a self timer that takes 3 pictures every 10 seconds? it might. Or do you mean more than 3 pictures every 5 seconds like a time lapse thing. I doubt it would have the time lapse mode, but you need to check the manual.
