have a built in meter?
Centre weighted meter?
spot meter? degree range?
In the viewfinder, can overexposure / underexposured be measured by stops? or is it just an arrow (like the Leica MP)?
Which leicas are capable of running without batteries? (i think the m7 is useless without batteries, but hte MP and M6 can run without batteries) Can someone confirm this?
Does leica's TTL (M7 / m6 models) work with flash guns?
the bessa is great. I like how the viewfinder displays +2/-2 stops of exposure. it is good when zoning. I'm infected with G.A.S. I'm seeking help one day at a time. I'm just curious. Ponies, I think that's a great answer. Thanks.
Nice to see a familiar face. Is the Bessa not working out for you?
The M5 and later have built-in meters. For the M4 and older you can buy a tiny meter than clips on the top plate or slides into the accessory shoe. Voigtlander makes a nice one.
The Leicas that do have meters use either TTL metering by bouncing light off of a white dot on the shutter curtain, or they use a separate window for the meter, and the display is either with a matchstick or diodes, but they all provide just a center weighted reading that does indicate how many stops you're over/under. If you need more flexibility/ precision, use a hand held meter. Gossen makes nice ones.
Batteries? The M5, M6, and MP only need them for the meter. If the batteries die on an M7, you also still have a working camera but only with shutter speeds of 1/60th and 1/125th.
Flash... up to the M4 you have a cold shoe (just an attachment point for a flash, which still needs to be connected by a cable to work) but the M5 and later have hot shoes (which trigger the flash automatically.) TTL cameras also give you the extra wizardry of TTL flash. Off-camera flash is also possible but I'm not sure why you'd want to do that with a Leica.

Gear Acquisition Syndrome. Yeah, I recently upgraded a telezoom and a set of tripod legs myself... and there's no end in sight.

The main function of the lens hood is to shade the lens from stray light, improving your contrast and image quality. But it will also protect the front barrel from the inevitable impacts against walls, door frames, and other real-life obstacles and in inclement weather; it can assist in keeping moisture or wind-blown debris off the lens. My digital camera lens openes very slowly. What's wrong?
I'm not exactly sure what model camera this is, but I know the brand is Lumix. Around my lens, it says DC VARIO-ELMAR 1:3.3-59/5.2-26 ASPH. I showed my camera to my brother, and he thinks it's a spring that's broken, and I think it's something sticky around the corners. Also, he put a fingerprint on the lens, is there a certain way to get that off without damaging the camera? When the camera is turned on, it opens very slowly, and I have to push it open the rest of the way. Do I have to take it to someone, or do I have to send it back to the company?
Thanks.
To repair or clean out the sticky substance, you will need to take it to a camera repair shop.
What is up with your brother putting a finger print on your fine lens? Sheesh

27th January 2009: Panasonic's new DMC-TZ6 is the latest addition to the award winning Lumix TZ family of digital cameras, which is renowned for packaging a remarkable 12x optical zoom in a compact, stylish body as well as featuring a 25mm ultra wide angle lens for wide angle shooting. Successor to the hugely popular DMC-TZ5, the TZ6 is set to be a firm favourite.
Ultra Wide Angle Lens with 12x Optical Zoom The 10 megapixel TZ6 features a high-quality LEICA DC VARIO ELMAR 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens with a 12x optical zoom. A lens like this, with a range from 25mm to 300mm in 35mm film equivalence, is almost inconceivable in such a small, lightweight camera. Comprising 10 elements in 8 groups, including 2 ED lenses and 2 aspherical lenses with 3 aspherical surfaces, and utilizing new lens material in its design, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly slim and compact body while passing Leica's stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance. The Extra Optical Zoom function that extends zoom power to 21.4x (at 3-megapixel resolution) by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer without deteriorating the image quality.
Intelligent Auto Mode Just Keeps Getting Better Panasonic incorporated Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. This mode is also further advanced with the inclusion of the AF tracking and Intelligent Exposure feature for the DMC-TZ6. Furthermore, digital red-eye correction is also integrated in the Face Detection.
In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating AF tracking, Intelligent Exposure, Face Detection, Intelligent Scene Selector, Mega O.I.S. (optical image stabilizer), and Intelligent ISO Control. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.
With the new AF Tracking function, the user can "lock" the focus onto a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the user having to hold the shutter button halfway down. This makes it easier to capture the perfect moment clearly and in sharp focus when shooting images of a child, pet, sports or any scene with moving subjects and spur-of-the-moment action.
Intelligent Exposure suppresses blocked shadows and blown highlights to capture images that look natural and true-to-life. It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects that the light source is behind the subject.
Face detection accuracy has been increased in the TZ6 to now provide continuous adjustment of the focus and exposure even if the face is turned sideways to the camera. Combined with AF Tracking, Face Detection helps users capture special moments, including the fleeting expressions on the faces of active children. Plus, with the TZ6, the red-eye effect can be digitally corrected automatically when it occurs due to the use the flash.
Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 5 scene modes - Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, and Night Scenery - best suits the shooting situation. The Quick AF system allows the camera to keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing a shutter button.
In addition to the advanced functions mentioned above, the iA mode inherits fundamental functions users need in a good digital still camera. These include MEGA O.I.S., which prevents blurring from hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. The MEGA O.I.S. conventionally has mode 1 and 2, and now it has AUTO mode to select the suitable one between the modes according to the zoom ratio being used.
The user can activate all of these useful functions by simply pressing an independent iA button on the top of the camera, which is newly equipped for direct activation. All these features make the TZ6 the ultimate, super-versatile automatic camera for capturing clear, beautiful, mistake-free photos with ease.
The TZ6 features an impressive 2.7inch 230,000 dot resolution Intelligent LCD, ensuring images can be viewed with ease.
High Performance Venus Engine IV
The image-processing LSI, Venus Engine IV, features advanced signal processing technology for rendering high quality images. Featured in the DMC- TZ6, the Venus Engine IV supports a super-fast response time making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. And in High-Speed Burst shooting mode,*1 it fires off an incredible 6.5 shots per second. You also get unlimited consecutive shooting,*2 which lets you keep shooting until the memory card is full.
The Venus Engine IV also supports a High Sensitivity mode that lets the DMC-TZ6 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400, sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.*3

Shooting objects 0.85 miles away with a 10X Zoom & 7.2 MP?
I have a Lumix DMC-TZ3 Camera (The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 is the successor of the TZ1 features 8.5 million effective pixels, 10x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 28-280mm LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR with built-in Image Stabilizer (MEGA O.I.S), and a 2.5″ LCD Screen. The camera is measuring in at 105 x 59.2 x 36.7 mm (4.20 x 2.37 x 1.47 in), weighing 222g and it’s running on Li-ion battery.)
I'm trying to photo large objects (atleast 35m wide) away from my position by 0.85 miles, What are the best settings that would make the TZ3 give the best result on such a distance ? (Zoom/ISO/Aspect Ratio/Metering Mode) I'm still a newbie in photographing, So Thanks for your help.
The best setting is have your camera setting on a tripod.
Then, the shutter, speed aperture, ISO and zoom are all going to be dependent on the conditions. You will want to lean toward as fast of a shutter speed as you can manage to reduce the possibility of camera shake blurring the image. This can happen even though you have Image Stabilization. Also, how "fast" your lens is, will have a bearing on shutter speed, and aperture settings.
If it's a clear day, I'd try to start with about 100 ISO, f-5.6, and try to use 1/1000 shutter speed. Work your way from there.
You say that you are still a newbie. Well that is the beauty of something like this. It's an excellent opportunity to try different settings. Try different aperture settings with different speeds. Push it to the limits until you see the image going bad. That way you learn what works and what doesn't. Go with the intent of shooting anywhere from 100 to 200 shots.
