Closeup Macro
What can be said about a sensor sise 23.6x15.8?
I'm interested in buying the Sony alpha 350, and I will propably use it most for closeups/macro shots
the camera has a good 14 mega pixels, but know that megapixles are only part of the story, and that it also matters how big the sensor is... becouse I want to make very sharp images I really care about this.
can anybody give me some good advise for this camera, or any other camera that is reasonably prised and can give me very sharp pictures. I'm not so interested in landscapes, but purely close ups of flowers and plants or, for excample, waterfalls . that are max 40 meters away... so I am curious about the effect of a shutter speed 1/4000 at the sharpness of the image too, becouse I really do not like blurred effects in photo's ( like with moving water, animals and such) thanks in advance !
The Sony is a decent camera and the sensor is APS-C sized which means it is about 15 times larger than the sensor in a point and shoot camera. It is however about 40% smaller than that of a full frame camera like the Sony A900 or the Canon and Nikon pro models. The APS-C size will be more than enough for what you want.
As far as shutter speed goes there will be few if any circumstances you will come across that you will ever use 1/4000th of second. There is very rarely enough light to do this. For freezing action you need a shutter speed of at least 1/250th of a second and up to about 1/1000th. This will cover nearly every situation you will come across from sports to waterfalls. So I would not worry at all about that.
For the subjects you say you want to shoot you will need the proper lenses. Unlike a point and shoot camera all DSLR lenses are not designed to focus very closely for macro work. You will need a dedicated macro lens. Cost will be between $400 and $800 for a macro lens. For the waterfalls the 18-55mm lens should be fine as long as you are within that distance. If you are further away you will also need a telephoto lens. Cost for these can be anywhere from $200-several thousand depending on quality and length of lens.
Some other cameras to look at would be the Canon Rebels or the Nikon D40 or D60. Feature wise they are all pretty much the same though Canon and Nikon do have more available lenses and other accessories.
